Plog 3rd August 2013 Internal Dialogue on Work and Play

August 3rd, 2013 Posted in Uncategorized

Our creative writing for personal and professional development group surprised me considerably on Thursday.  When we did the Work/Play exercise I mentioned in my last Plog, http://www.writingtank.com/plog-27th-july-2013-who-cares-about-the-evens/, the consensus was to keep each stream of consciousness discrete, and not to combine Work with Play in a scenario to watch other people perform.  This suggestion came from a lady, whose background is in Drama.  She has regularly run a ‘Playback’ group, which I believe she set up originally.  There was a lot of creative talent in our ‘Fire Works!’ workshop last week.

After a warm-up, during which we each introduced metaphors, beginning with the statement: ‘If I were a job, I would be . . .’,  what we decided to do was to go round the room, alternating work and play, so if someone started us off with Play, the next person delivered their Work, followed by Play, and so on.  It was fun.

Part of the reason for this was that participants expected their own streams of consciousness to remain private.  They were simply uploading their muddled thoughts onto the page, and trying to make gradual sense of them.  For this reason I shall simply copy below my own output.  We have a general ground-rule at Lapidus meetings that people are welcome to discuss their own creative output outside the group, but all exchange within the group remains confidential, unless explicit permission to share is sought and granted.

I have a feeling we may have begun with Play, but many people are conditioned to complete their chores before taking part in recreation, so I shall begin with Work and deliver my contribution:

Work

Resistance to energy expenditure

There was some equation in A-Level physics

at school – something linking work and power

with time somewhere into the bargain;

bargain – perhaps that is what it is all about,

just another exchange mechanism,

swapping my energy for your resources.

Does it sap my source – my essence?

Prostitution this energy drain

but work could be so fulfilling

Isn’t it one of our fundamental requirements:

love, vigour and purposeful activity . . .

but is purposeful activity always work?

Increasingly it is:- when you’re grown up.

When you’re responsible, they programme you.

They overwrite your wiring with automated replies:

Thank you for calling.  We know you are waiting:

to play.

Play

for your vivacity

for what we are about to receive,

let us play.

Let us play for our aspirations.

Let’s pretend what we think is real.

Let us act at being mature.

Let’s do a good job at it.

At the end of each leg is a legend.

Let’s imagine it is true

The legends turn into people

See what happens when you follow through.

For what we are about to bequeath,

let us play

Let us play the oboe

Let us play the bassoon.

Let us quaver fluctuating undulations

that cannot die out

not any time soon.

Our group seemed to decide that work and play are intrinsically inseparable.

On typing my script up at home, I was personally keen to explore my own internal dialogue, which I am happy to share with you here.  To follow this, you can read straight across, from left to right, and see how the two activities interact.

If you are with friends, you feel comfortable sharing your more private thoughts with, you may like to give one half of the conversation to somebody, you would like to perform your Work, and the other to someone, who can represent your Playful side.

If you all have time and inclination, the next steps could be to let them recite lines at their own discretion, while you direct the performance.  This might even lead you to resolving an internal conflict, which had been un-broach-able before.
